There is a sentence you have probably heard in some form: "Your emotions are getting in the way." It surfaces in performance reviews, in couples therapy, in airport self-help books, in the advice of people who consider themselves rational. The implication is always the same: emotions distort judgment, introduce noise into the signal, lead us astray. The prescription follows naturally — learn to manage them, suppress them, detach from them, rise above them.
This framing is not just unhelpful. It is biologically backwards.
The brain does not perceive — it predicts
Karl Friston, neuroscientist at University College London, has spent two decades formalizing a model of brain function that challenges the passive-perception view at its root. Under what he calls the free energy principle, the brain is not a camera pointed at reality. It is a prediction machine — one that generates constant hypotheses about what should be happening, compares those hypotheses to incoming sensory data, and updates accordingly.
This gap between prediction and perception — what the literature calls "prediction error" — is not a malfunction. It is the engine of learning, of adaptation, of all behavior. And it is, Friston argues, the substrate of emotion.
An emotion, in this framework, is not an interruption to cognition. It is cognition operating at high precision on a high-stakes prediction error. When your chest tightens before a difficult conversation, that constriction is your nervous system flagging that its model of the world — of what is safe, of what is expected, of what is owed — is under threat. The anxiety is not irrational. It is informative. It is the system saying: this prediction doesn't fit, and the gap matters.
The cost of misreading the signal
If emotions are predictions wearing a bodily costume, then the usual advice to suppress or transcend them makes about as much sense as turning off your car's warning lights because you don't like the dashboard.
Antonio Damasio documented what happens when the emotional signal goes dark. In his landmark Descartes' Error (1994), Damasio described patients with damage to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex — the region where emotional processing and decision-making converge. These patients retained full logical capacity. Their IQ was unaffected. Their verbal reasoning was intact. But they were catastrophically bad at making decisions in their own lives: where to live, whom to trust, how to allocate time.
Damasio's interpretation was radical and has held up: what these patients lacked was access to what he called somatic markers — bodily signals that encode the affective value of past experiences and allow that value to be recruited in present decisions. Without those markers, every decision becomes an unbounded calculation, unanchored from lived experience. The brain computes without wisdom.
Reason without emotion isn't cleaner. It's lost.
What "understanding your emotions" actually means
The problem, then, is not that our emotions deceive us. It is that we haven't learned to read them.
Consider the difference between these two responses to anxiety before a job interview:
Option one: I'm anxious. I need to calm down. This feeling is not useful right now. You suppress the signal, perform composed, wonder why the feeling persists.
Option two: I'm anxious. What is my nervous system predicting? What model is it trying to protect? You notice the anxiety is pointing toward a belief — that your value depends on this particular outcome, that failure would confirm something you already half-believe about yourself. That is information. That is a model that can be updated.
The distinction is not therapeutic; it is epistemic. In the first case, you treat the emotion as interference. In the second, you treat it as data. The data may be outdated — the model may be running on software installed in childhood, under conditions that no longer apply. But the signal itself is not wrong. It is pointing at a real gap between what your nervous system expects and what it is encountering.
Lisa Feldman Barrett's work on constructed emotion adds a further layer. In How Emotions Are Made (2017), Barrett argues that emotions are not hardwired responses but active constructions — the brain's best guess, given its predictive models, current bodily state, and prior experience. This means emotional granularity matters: the finer your vocabulary for distinguishing emotional states, the more precisely your brain can generate and update its models. "Anxious" is a crude label. "Ashamed of wanting approval I've already decided not to need" is a model worth examining.
The language you weren't taught
The reason emotional illiteracy is so widespread has less to do with individual weakness than with structural omission. Western education systems spent centuries teaching logic, grammar, mathematics, and rhetoric. They did not teach the alphabet of inner life.
Children learn early that emotions are to be managed — which usually means hidden, minimized, or expressed only in sanctioned ways. The operational vocabulary stays thin: happy, sad, angry, scared. The subtler registers — the specific quality of irritation that signals a violated value, the particular ache of frustrated longing, the muffled discomfort that precedes a decision you already know you'll regret — go unnamed and therefore unread.
Learning the language of your emotions is not a luxury exercise. It is a form of cognitive maintenance. Friston's framework suggests that an organism that can read its own prediction errors accurately will adapt more successfully than one that cannot. Barrett's framework suggests that richer emotional concepts produce more nuanced emotional experiences and better regulation. Both converge on the same practical conclusion: precision about what you feel is a cognitive asset, not a psychological indulgence.
Your emotions are not lying to you. They are offering you a read on the gap between your model of the world and what the world is doing. The question is not how to silence them. The question is whether you have developed enough fluency to understand what they are trying to say.
